"Fighting Pandemic, Ensuring Healthy New Year" Lecture Series Successfully Concludes

During the winter vacation of the 2021-2022 academic year, Tianjin saw a surge of COVID-19 cases driven by the Omicron variant. Under the strong leadership of the Party and the government, Tianjin has mobilized the whole city to fight the pandemic. The School of Medicine and the Siyuan Academy of NKU launched a series of lectures titled Fighting Epidemic, Ensuring Healthy New Year to answer NKU's call for organizing beneficial educational and teaching activities for students during the winter vacation, helping the teachers and students fight the epidemic and enriching the students' holiday experience. Teachers of the School of Medicine and the affiliated hospitals of NKU held 16 lectures on health since January 21. The lecture series successfully concluded on February 9.

The lecturers included backbones teachers of the School of Medicine and the affiliated hospitals of NKU and tutors of the Siyuan Academy. The lecturers focused on a wide range of topics, such as health, anti-epidemic medical history, medical ethics and psychological problems in dealing with the epidemic. The lectures were both interesting and of scientific significance, which provided not only guidance for daily behaviors and habits, but also a systemic explanation of the psychological and thinking mode. The lectures were open to NKU teachers and students as well as the public. A total of 1,651 people attended the 16 impressive lectures.

In the lecture titled A Look into the Post-epidemic Era, Liu Yin gave the audience a general and yet professional idea of etiology and explained the concept of a community with a shared future for mankind. From virus mutation to the future trends of the epidemic, a wide range of resonating topics was covered in the fascinating lecture. In the lecture The Development of Organ Transplantation Technology and Related Ethical Issues, Xu Hanhui inspired the audience by sharing the root and current situation of important ethical issues in organ transplantation, which stimulated the audience's strong interest in these medical ethical issues. In Medicine and Pathology, Yang Zhengduo elaborated on the relationship between medicine and pathology, introduced the nucleic acid testing process and personal protection methods during the epidemic, and answered many questions from students. In Mastering Endotracheal Intubation, Wang Hao helped the audience understand endotracheal intubation, which is an important first aid skill, and the functions and application scenarios of various endotracheal tubes, and popularize first aid knowledge among the teachers and students. In Anatomy in Epidemic Prevention and Control, Shen Tianyu introduced the exercising methods suitable at home during the epidemic from the perspective of anatomy for sports, including the movements to exercise upper and lower limbs and core muscles and their anatomical bases. In Overview of Modern Cardiovascular Medicine Development and Vascular Disease Management, Director Wei Liping introduced the origin and development of modern cardiovascular science, explained the risk factors of coronary artery and extensive vascular diseases, and explored the health management models in accordance with livings styles and the global pandemic. In Talking About Dry Eye, Director Ma Lin introduced the concept of dry eye and the pathogenesis and risk factors of the disease, and helped the teachers and students to have a scientific understanding of dry eye and learn a better way to protect the eyes…

In this series of lectures, the teachers made learning a fun activity by explaining and inspiring the audience to think in a way from the shallow to the deep. By actively interacting with the audience to achieve better teaching and learning results, the lecturers not only imparted knowledge, but more importantly, they made valuable suggestions to promote health, inspired everyone to form opinions about the epidemic. The audience said they have benefitted greatly from these lectures.

The WeChat official accounts of One Heart to Remove Epidemic and NK Siyuan of the School of Medicine provided online support for the series of lectures. Video playback of the lectures are available on the accounts for teachers and students of NKU. Meanwhile, the School of Medicine is holding an exhibition of excellent teaching resources of NKU's general elective course Biosafety and Emergency Response Practice for Outbreaks of New Infectious Diseases, which provides convenience for students to carry out in-depth study.
