The 35th Anniversary of NKU School of Medicine since its First Enrollment and the Conference on Innovative Development of Medical Disciplines

    At the age of thirty-five, the School of Medicine is still in its original aspiration and is making progress with each passing day in the medical field, ready to continue the glorious journey. In the warm atmosphere of celebrating the 105th anniversary of the founding of NKU, the School of Medicine celebrated the 35th anniversary since its first enrollment. On October 19, the 35th Anniversary of NKU School of Medicine since its First Enrollment and the Conference on Innovative Development of Medical Disciplines was held at the Tin Ka Ping Concert Hall on the Balitai campus.


    At around 9 a.m., the anniversary conference kicked off with the solemn national anthem.


    Yang Qingshan, Secretary of the Party Committee of NKU, Zhang Yingze, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Dean of the School of Medicine of NKU, Li Jie, Deputy Director of Tianjin Health Commission, Hao Jihui, President of Tianjin Medical University, Cheng Tao, Director of the Hematology Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (Institute of Hematology of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences), Xiong Wei, Vice President of the Graduate School of the PLA General Hospital, Wang Ximo, Secretary of the Party Committee of Tianjin Third Central Hospital, Xu Jiangang, Vice President of Tianjin People's Hospital, Zhang Yamin, Vice President of Tianjin First Central Hospital, Wu Xiaoming, Secretary of the Party Committee of Tianjin Stomatological Hospital, Wang Chun'ge, Secretary of the Party Committee of Tianjin Eye Hospital, and Yang Jie, Secretary of the Party Committee and President of Tianjin Beichen Hospital attended the conference.


    More than 500 people attended the conference, including relevant leaders from peer colleges, research institutes, cooperative hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, heads of various functional departments and peer colleges on the campus, representatives of alumni, retired teachers and representatives of faculty and students. The anniversary conference was presided over by Xu Meng, Director of the School of Medicine.

    Over the past 35 years, NKU’s medical disciplines have been committed to progress and have continued to move forward, blazing a path of innovative development for a comprehensive research university to offer medicine majors. Yang Shuang, Executive Vice President of the School of Medicine, gave a report on the development of medical disciplines, providing a detailed introduction to the discipline development, faculty and student teams, scientific research, international exchanges, student development, alumni situation and future development etc.

    NKU's medical disciplines originated from the medical preparatory class established by the School of Science in 1930. NKU was the first comprehensive university in China to establish a medical preparatory class. In 1989, the School of Medicine began the first enrollment of clinical medicine students in a seven-year program. Currently, the School of Medicine has 4 undergraduate majors, namely, 5+3 integrated clinical medicine, stomatology, intelligent medical engineering, and optometry; a doctoral degree authorization point in clinical medicine, a professional doctoral degree authorization point in clinical medicine, 2 first-level master's degree authorization points, and 2 professional master's degree authorization points. With 1 directly affiliated hospital and 7 non-directly affiliated hospitals in Tianjin, it has a comprehensive joint operation with the PLA General Hospital, and has established long-term teaching partnerships with the Tianjin Medical University Cancer Hospital and the Hematology Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences.

    In recent years, the School of Medicine has continuously strengthened the construction of a talent system with complete disciplines and echelons, and has created a rationally structured academic team consisting of academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, national leading talents, and national “Four Youth” talents etc. As for curricula construction, the School of Medicine has continuously explored ideas for ideological and political program construction, and has been approved for 3 national first-class undergraduate programs and 14 Tianjin first-class undergraduate programs. It currently has 8 national clinical teaching bases. Over the past five years, the School of Medicine has won 36 scientific and technological achievement awards at the provincial and ministerial level or above. It has established long-term cooperative relationships with more than 20 high-level universities and research institutions around the world, and appointed more than 90 foreign professors. Students on campus pursue their dreams and shoulder their responsibilities, while graduates actively engage in key healthcare industries and areas, serving for high-quality development of China’s health undertakings.


    At the end of the conference, a fascinating performance titled “Fast Developing Medicine, Glorious Medical Road” was carefully choreographed by teachers and students of the School of Medicine and healthcare staff of the affiliated hospitals, showing the high-spirited youthful outlook of the new generation of NKU medical professionals.

    That afternoon, the Forum on Innovative Development of Medical Disciplines was held in the lecture hall on the second floor of the Shiing-shen Building on the Balitai Campus. Experts and scholars from NKU, PLA General Hospital, Institute of Hematology of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, National Center for Global Health and Medicine, University of Tokyo, West Virginia University, University of Pennsylvania, Institute of Systems Engineering of Chinese Academy of Military Sciences, China National Institute of Standardization and other universities and research institutes at home and abroad attended the forum and gave special reports.

    On the same day, the alumni also visited an exhibition on NKU's history to experience the patriotic and enterprising spirit of NKU, and attended a symposium for alumni of the School of Medicine in Siyuan Hall to relive their time studying at NKU.
